Setting Goals for Success

December 17, 2007

Don't forget to submit your entry for our Christmas Limerick Contest. The deadline is December 21st. The winning entry wi ll be announced on Christmas Eve and will receive a copy of Madeleine L'Engle's WALKING ON WATER: REFLECTIONS ON FAITH AND ART. This is a great book, so give yourself a chance to win it. :)

And now for today's Musing That Matters.

Psychologists have proven that those who set goals achieve far more than those who do not. Some people say that they have their goals in their heads. But psychologists have also observed that those who write down their goals are much more likely to reach them than those who don't.

There is something about writing down our goals that engraves them in our subconscious minds. In some way, writing seals our goals in a way that helps us to "own" them. And when we begin to own something, we are more likely to take care of what we own. In other words, we are more likely to give attention to our goals.

As the new year approaches, I encourage you to take time to write down your goals for 2008. Write goals in different areas of your life. Here are some practical and proven steps to take when writing down goals:

1) Pray about the goals God has for you during the coming year.

2) Write down those goals in the different areas of your life: spiritual, mental, physical, family, writing, financial, etc.

3) Set a target date by which you want to achieve the goal.

4) List foreseeable obstacles that might stand in the way of achieving your goal.

5) List action steps you will take to overcome those obstacles.

Then, after you write down your goals, keep them in front of you and read them daily. The more you keep your goals in front of you, the more you increase your chances of achieving them.

To set goals is to cooperate with the Holy Spirit. God is a God of purpose and plan. Nothing happens by chance with God. Nor should it with you.

And that's my "musing that matters" for today. What's yours? :)

Blessings,

MaryAnn

MaryAnn this formula is fool proof. You suggested it years ago when I began coaching with you, and it's helped me tremendously. I don't think I would have done it otherwise. Thank you for this crucial tool. I pray for discipline and a docile spirit.

Setting goals gives you a road map to follow. But we have to remember that sometimes, God takes us on a detour, and we end up at the end of a goal we didn't plan.

Set your goals and trust God to get you there!

Yes, I have written down goals in every area of my life for quite a number of years. I pray about them for weeks and then put them down on paper. I have found that my timetable is sometimes shorter than God's but that doesn't bother me since I have a direction. Whatever He puts on your heart to do He will enable you to do it in His time. How wonderful to rest in Him for all of our goals. Thank you, MaryAnn, for this beneficial reminder.

Thanks for this reminder, maryann, and at such an important time as this year draws to a close. Like Janet, I, too, remember how helpful it was during our coaching sessions and plan to do this again for 2008. I especially like step # 1--praying and asking God for your goals. As Henry Blackaby says in Experiencing God, we should join ourselves to God's purposes, not ask him to bless us in our own plans! rose

Thank you, MaryAnn, for this specific reminder. I've been tossing around goals for 2008 in my head for a while - and thinking of you as I did it! Your lessons from group coaching years ago stuck with me, a very good thing! Am believing for good things for all musers and myself. God is good:-)
