Culture and the Writer
The argument goes that writing reflects a culture. While there is truth to this argument, I would propose that writing also--and, perhaps, more importantly-- impacts a culture.
The writer holds in his pen the power of persuasion. That power carries with it the tremendous responsibility to wield his pen with integrity, wisdom, and grace. But a problem arises when the writer's worldview is in conflict with the Biblical worldview. When such a situation occurs, the writer often does more harm than good.
As Christians, we have been entrusted with the truth. As Christians who write, we have been given the responsibility to proclaim that truth. As we do so, we will impact our culture for Christ.
After all is said and done, isn't that really why we write?
That's my "musing that matters" for today. What's yours? :)
Blessings,
MaryAnn

Unfortunately, people believe what they see in print. Even if it's false.
I write for kids and have to be even more careful and diligent in what I put forth because children are more trusting than adults.
And if there's a question of whether I should write something or not, I ask myself, would I be comfortable having my mom or my pastor read what I wrote?
We have a huge responsibility as writers and I believe we fall under the verse that says those who teach will be judged more strictly.
All the more reason to depend on God!
So true, MaryAnn! It's especially important to write God's truth in the world today. Unfortunately, the written word is being used by many "enlightened" voices in direct opposition to Christ. These false prophets (so to speak) are trying to change culture. We need to be just as productive with our written word to impact the world for Christ.
Very true. Thank you for these important musings! This is another reason, I believe, to try to be published, not only in Christian circles, but in secular ones as well. There are some people who would never pick up a book from an inspiriational publisher who buy secular books all the time. For those who are called to it, the challenge is to present God's truth without being obvious about it, but being salt and light, and making the reader thirsty for the Living Water. May God grant us all His favor as we serve Him through our writing, music, art, and in any area to which we are called!
Good Morning....
I agree with what everyone has said. I especially like Hope's reminder that we must not forget writing for the secular market. I keep toying with the idea of writing a devotional column in a secular paper but have never followed through. Pray that I will do it in 2008. I need to just take the first step in faith.
