Writing Fillers

March 10, 2008

A great way to keep the writing juices flowing and the money coming in is to write fillers. Fillers are little pieces of writing ranging anywhere from a practical tip to a short poem. Fillers do what their name indicates: they "fill" those leftover spaces that result when articles are laid out on the page.

There are three specific advantages to writing fillers:

1) They are always in demand;

2) They take little time to write;

3) They provide decent pay.

Another advantage to writing fillers is that it's fairly easy to break into that market since editors always have those little, left-over spaces to fill.

So where should you start? A good place is Sally Stuart's Christian Writers' Market Guide. The Guide has a whole section just on markets for fillers. Another good place to start is your favorite magazine. Read through it looking for fillers. See what topics are covered in fillers. Then take a shot writing one yourself.

Fillers provide the perfect venue for those who don't have large blocks of time to write. If that's you, then use those five-minute snippets of time you do have and "fill" them by writing fillers.

And that's my "musing that matters" for today. What's yours? :)

Blessings,

MaryAnn

Hi MaryAnn...A great reminder. In the past, I have had some of my grandchildren's cute sayings published. My poems have also been published as fillers quite often. It's an easy way to get credentials for your resume and make some money too. I plan on taking your advice and will start sending some out in the near future.

I hadn't thought about fillers lately. Thank you for the reminder! :-)

By the way, I've been absent a few days due to a 3 day power outage. PTL, God preserved the food in our refrigerators/freezers, and I was able to saw enough wood with my hand saw to keep Mom and me from freezing. We had 6 inches of snow, and elsewhere in the state there was over a foot. Made it to church yesterday evening, and it was a blessing! There's more to this story, but I'll just say that we're both praising God with our whole hearts for the simple things we take for granted!
